Converting to Vista….

I just converted operating system on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 640m)  from XP-SP2 to Vista business edition. I was hesitating to do it, but now that I have done it, it is all interesting….

There are a lot articles mentioning the do’s and don’ts of the the upgrade…all valid…just sharing my experience.

  1. I tried using the upgrade feature and after 6 cycles of going through reporting of compatible software and hardware issues, I gave up.
  2. Although during each cycle I was asked to stay connected to the web so  that the latest patches and drives can be downloaded automatically, it never worked.
  3. So having run out of time and upgrade options, I decided to do a fresh install and it all worked without any issues, just that I had to install all the software’s, tools and utilities I use….
  4. Surprisingly, all the issues (software / hardware) reported during upgrade process, hardly surfaced !!!!!
  5. I reinstalled all the software’s / tools and utilities again and it all works without any issues….

Had I taken up a fresh install approach up-front, I would have saved lot of time (and frustration!)

I have had a different opinion when I did it the first time on one of the virtual machines before, here is the article…

Great article on why not to get Vista right now?10th March 2007

None of those issues which I faced the first time surfaces again, same laptop, same software’s, same tools and same DVD of operating system !!!!

Is it getting better? Or is it un-reliable?

Now that I am using it, I will go with “It is getting better!”
