Hiring decisions should not be put to a panel…
While it may not sound like a good management practice and it is always good to have multiple opinions and multiple people have a say in the process, it does delay the hiring process and often gets wrong people in the wrong positions. It not only results in a delay, it also is a loss of an opportunity for both the team leader and the candidate.
I am of the opinion that
- Small / medium business does not need to follow a democratic hiring process.
- It’s OK for the team leader to make a decision that will impact his/her team.
Instead of hiring by a panel / committee, the focus should be more on:
- Skill set
- Personality required to do the job
- Defined periodic goals, targets, objectives and deliverables
- Mutual understanding on commercial terms
Delay in hiring process directly affects the projects and hence should get an appropriate priority rather than a panel or committee.
