Ozfox 2007…

I attended OzFox 2007 last week, good location, great speakers and fantastic sessions.

Craig Bailey did a great job (as usual) in organizing the conference. Peter Metcalf and Talman Admin / Tech staff (Nicole, Elle, Luis, Bing ) were the back bone of the conference.

Some key outputs from the conference:

  1. Reporting enhancements
  2. Sedna CTP -2
  3. Exchanging common business ideas

over all, great 3 days of VFP and related stuff.

There were around 40-45 attendees at the conference and as usual, it was difficult to find one person who was not worried about state of his / her existing application (except the speakers and Talman group ).

There were quiet a few interactive sessions which ended up with discussions on issues like:

  1. What should be done about our VFP applications
  2. What’s the future of VFP
  3. Competitors taking marketing / sales advantage with use of new tools
  4. Difficult to find / maintain VFP resources
  5. Microsoft not doing much to enhance VFP to next level
  6. Clients happy with existing application but worried about future investments

and….it goes on….

My suggestions / answers to all such related issues:

  1. There are a lot of companies / consultants still consulting for VFP
  2. Not difficult to identify and outsource work to such companies/ consultants (provided cost justified)
  3. VFP still has a good 5-7 years of life left, which according to me is enough time to plan out migration to new development tool (if required)
  4. VFP community is still largely active
  5. All the good things have to come to an end some day

And before I forget here is something special from Feng Zeng, a video on OzFox 2007

Would be interesting to see how OzFox 2008 goes…..looking forward to it.
