SQL DownUnder CodeCamp 2007 – Bare Metal tuning of SQL server (3)

Session-3

Topic: Bare Metal Tuning of SQL server

Kelvin Kline

Is a Technical Strategy Manager, SQL server solutions and a SQL server MVP working with Quest Software. He is also the President of PASS.

Major presentation was revolving around Methodology, CPU’s, Memory, Workload profile consideration, Disk I/O, virtualization,    ….on how they can be used better, Pros and Cons of each category, bench marking tests on  each of the category and up to what extent it can be beneficiary…over all an interesting session, specially for DBA’s.

For virtualization, suggested, avoid MS Virtual server and lower versions of VMWare, suggested VMWare ESX for virtualization as  is low overhead as far as memory and overall performance is concerned.

Dr. Greg Low – Consultant – Readify

The new data types (specially the Date and time) are really impressive along with the whole list of other changes (power point  slide should be available on the SQL down under web site). Lack of support for Visual Studio 2005 at launch date was identified as one of the main concerns.

SDLC, Phases and task ownership – Inception / Initiation Phase (2)

Continuing from the previous article, we move on to the Inception phase, this phase starts after the Inquiry phase completes. During this phase, the development manager or Project Manager creates the Engineering Requirement Specification (ERS), which describes all technical requirements of the project. This phase ends if the ERS is signed as complete and is informative so that it enables engineers and testers to create the software that can fulfil the customer?s need.

Step:1 Define Customer Requirement

Write the Customer Requirement Document (CRD), a non-technical document which describes the project mostly as use cases

Ownership / Responsibility: Project Manager / Customer / Pre-Sale

Step:2 Customer Acceptance

Review and get acceptance from customer

Ownership / Responsibility: Project Manager / Development Manager /Customer

Step:3 Define Technical Requirement

Write the ERS with all detail about the technical requirements of the project

Ownership / Responsibility: Project Manager / Development Manager

Step:4 Review

Review with the team for clearness / Perhaps discussion with customer for unclear issues

Ownership / Responsibility: Project Manager / Development Manager / Software Engineer / Software Tester

Step:5 Customer Acceptance

Review and get acceptance from customer

Ownership / Responsibility: Project Manager / Development Manager / Customer

Step:6 Update plan

Correct the draft project plan created in previous phase with updated estimation / Inform customer and team / Get customer acceptance

Ownership / Responsibility: Project Manager / Development Manager / Customer

The documents to be produced at the end of this phase are Engineering requirements specifications (ERS), Project Plan.

Launching the task manager…..the third way….

Everyone knows that the task manager can be launched by the following two methods:

First Method:
Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE and click on the ‘Task Manager…’ button on the Windows Security dialog.

Second Method:
Right click on the Windows Taskbar and chose ‘Task Manager…’

but very few know (I was one of them till I found out) the third and the easiest method (no right clicks, no dialog, no security…..) which is:

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC and the Task Manager will be launched instantly.

And guess what…it works on Vista as well….
